Meeting Minutes

President Jerry opened the meeting and called on Steve Farmer who led the pledge and invocation.

Pete Michenfelder introduced the guests and visiting Rotarians. President Jerry gave thanks to everyone for contributing to the fund last week. We were able to raise $178.17 to benefit the Red Cross. This week's Club Challenger is Chris Etterlee and the Outside Challenger is Fuller, Frost, and Associates. Greg Deloach gave the Sunshine Report.
President Jerry made the following announcements/presentations:

  • The Rotary Greenjackets game is tentatively scheduled for August 7th.
  • Presented Tim Owings with his Paul Harris plus 3 pin.
He called on President Elect Billy Franke to give the club an update on the local grant process. The deadline is 7/1/15 to submit a request. The club has $4,200 in funding to support the local community.

He called on Scott Kelly to introduce new member, Dora Hogg, attorney with Fulcher Hagler and a Rotary "legacy" as the daughter and daughter in law of Rotarians. He called on Russ Morgan to introduce new member Rick McMurtry, consultant with the UGA Small Business Development Office. Rick is a former Rotarian having served in three clubs previously.

Connie Melear introduced our guest speaker, Dr. Sudha Ratan, a Professor in the GRU Department of Political Science. Dr. Ratan is a nationally recognized expert on International Terrorism and Foreign Policy who is often called on to consult on national matters.

She delivered a presentation on the Rise of ISIL and the Challenge to US Foreign Policy. Dr. Ratan did a great job of providing an overview of ISIL and explaining the history of the caliphate. She discussed several of the challenges of trying to unify the region which include geographical borders that were established centuries ago without any regard for the diversity of the populations.

As a result, both religious and political views are being forced on populations that have long held on to opposite views. Had the original borders been based on the diversity of the populations instead of commercial interest of foreign countries like France and Great Britain much of the unrest in the region would not exist today.

She also blamed the European countries for "dragging us into the middle" to help fight their battles for them. This has contributed to the strong feelings of hatred toward the USA. Dr. Ratan concluded her remarks and accepted questions from the audience.

The meeting was adjourned after reciting the Four-Way test.
