2024 Speech Contest
The Rotary Club of Augusta sponsors a speech contest for high school students in Richmond and Columbia Counties. The 1st place award is $1,000 and the 2nd place award is $500. Both winners will then compete at the Rotary Zone level. The Zone winner must present his or her winning speech at the Rotary District Conference in April 2024 where he or she will be receiving an additional award of a $1,000 scholarship.
The Rotary Club of Augusta contest will be on February 26, 2026 in the Founders’ Room at the Miller Theater beginning at 8:30 a.m. at 708 Broad Street. The registration deadline is February 16, 2024. The 1st and 2nd place winners will present their speeches at noon on March 4, 2024 to the Rotary Club, where they will receive their awards. PARENTS ARE URGED TO ATTEND THE PRESENTATIONS at the Miller Theater and at the Rotary Club meeting at Enterprise Mill, 1450 Greene Street (next to Fat Man’s Café).
Students must prepare and present a speech of 3-4 minutes in length on one of two topics.
One is the Rotary 4-Way Test:
“Of the things that we think, say, or do:
- Is it the TRUTH?
- Is it FAIR to all concerned?
- Will it build GOODWILL and better FRIENDSHIPS?
- Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?”
If you choose the 4-Way Test as your topic, think about what those principles mean to you personally and how you think applying them in daily life will benefit you and those around you. How will applying these principles help you be successful? For more information, go to www.Rotary.org.
The second topic is the Rotary International President’s theme for 2023-24, “CREATE HOPE IN THE WORLD.” The President calls for Rotary to “create hope in the world by working for peace and mental wellbeing. He urges members to engage in tough conversations and earn the trust that’s necessary to realize these values.” (For more information, go to www.Rotary.org). Think about what this concept means in our divided world and how subscribing to this principle could help reduce the differences among us.
