Meeting Minutes

President Jerry opened the meeting and called on Eric Montgomery who led the pledge and invocation.

Pete Michenfelder introduced the guests and visiting Rotarians. President Jerry gave thanks to last week's Club CART Challenger, Lowell and Gloria Greenbaum, who helped us raise $413.68 for the fund. This week's CART fund is being donated to the Red Cross to assist with the recent increase in expenses resulting from the Marshall Square fire that displaced more than 80 residents. Thom Tuckey gave the Sunshine Report.

President Jerry called on Marc Miller to introduce our newest member, Dr. Peter Buckley, Dean of the School of Medicine at GRU.

Paul Dainer introduced our guest speaker, Dr. Samir N. Khleif, Director of the GRU Cancer Center. Dr. Khleif gave a very informative presentation on the prominent need for a Comprehensive Cancer Center as designated by the National Cancer Institute (NCI). Statistics showed that our state, and in particular, certain demographic populations within our state, have an extremely high number of cancer diagnoses.

Compared to our neighbors with similar sized populations, Georgia does not have an adequate number of cancer centers. Georgia also does not provide the financial support from state funds that others, such as North Carolina, provide.

Pursuing the Comprehensive Cancer Center designation will allow GRU to treat patients in Georgia so they do not have to travel to other states and will also attract patients from other states to our hospital. The estimated economic impact of this designation is between $1.5-2 billion annually.

The meeting was adjourned after reciting the Four-Way test.
