Hull Fund

Hull Fund Chair Haskell Toporek recognized Steve Hobbs for his many years of service as the Secretary-Treasurer of the fund.  After more than 20 years in this role, Steve is stepping down from the Board of Trustees.  In honor of his service, Haskell bestowed upon Steve the Paul Harris plus 3 designation.

Haskell also reported that Past President Shanda Vaughn would be replacing Steve on the Board of Trustees.

Our GRSP student, Simbainshe Mutoti from Zimbabwe, was in attendance along with our former student, Kaushini Pathirana, who has decided to continue her education at Augusta University.

President Faye reported that Simbai has enjoyed his first ten days in Augusta having already participated in many social events and concerts.  This past week he was the guest of honor at a Welcome Party hosted by Susan and Lee Jernigan and over the weekend he moved into his new apartment at University Village.

CART: President Faye asked everyone to please continue to contribute to the blue buckets on the table or online at mycartfund.org using the same login credentials you use with DACDB.  During the last Rotary year we donated $17,262.55 to CART.

  • August 18 will be Rotary Night at the Augusta Greenjackets Game.  Tickets will be $27 per person and flyers are on the table to sign up.
  • The annual College Pick-em will kick off on August 29nd with scouting reports from various teams. We will have a special gameday menu that day.

In Memoriam

Bill Keogh presented a resolution honoring club member George Hall who passed away unexpectedly in September of last year.

George was recognized for his honesty, integrity, and “will do” attitude that he brought to every situation.  He could be funny and lighthearted, but serious when he needed to be.  He was a friend and mentor to many, but above all he loved his family and his God.

George’s family members were in attendance including his wife Margaret, son Thomas, and father-in-law Dick Carr.  Several members of the Hull Barrett law firm also attended.

The resolution was adopted unanimously and George was remembered with a moment of silence.

Ed Presnell introduced today’s speakers, JoAnn Herbert and Penny Wasden.   Both JoAnn and Penny are members of the Women in Philanthropy in the CSRA.  This is a charitable organization with over 200 women who are committed to a philanthropic effort focused on the unique needs of women and children with the local communities.

Each member of the group contributes $1000 in dues on an annual basis.  Funds are then used to support needs in the community.  Eighty percent of annual dues are allocated to direct support/grants and the remaining funds are invested in an endowment.  There are no salaried employees of the group so there is almost no overhead incurred.

Men are not able to join WIP, but are strongly encouraged to both support the organization financially and help direct those in need to the organization.

Both JoAnn and Penny shared why they are strong supporters of this great organization and their hope is to expand their support to reach more non-profits in the CSRA beyond just the large national organizations.  There are many organizations doing great work in the area that just need exposure and some financial assistance to take their efforts to the next level.

Anyone wishing to join or contribute to WIP can go to their website, www.wipcsra.org for more information.

Following questions from the audience, President Faye led us in reciting the four-way test and adjourned the meeting.
