Guest Speaker/Program

James Heffner introduced our guest speaker, Mr. Steve Chalker, Director of Operations with the Burn Foundation of America (f/k/a Southeastern Firefighters Burn Foundation).

The Foundation was formed in 1988 by Dr. Joseph M. Still to support burn patients and their families. The Foundation partners with the JM Still Burn Center and provides lodging, meals, and transportation to patients in the burn center and their families.

The Chavis House at Shirley Badke Retreat is located on the campus of Doctors Hospital just a few steps from the Burn Center and has the capacity to house up to 40 guests per night. Since 2019, the Burn Foundation has served over 2,400 patients and families, provided 1,617 guests with free lodging totaling 7,986 nights.  In addition, the Foundation has provided over 1,000 patients with transitional services.

The Foundation has partnered with 53 church and community partners to provide 14,500 meals in 2020.  Individuals and businesses partner with the Foundation to support its activities.  Locally, Jersey Mikes has raised over $40,000 and the employees of Jefferson Electric Cooperative have been strong supporters.

In total, the Foundation raised a little more than $1 million through donations, fundraisers, and grants.  Mr. Chalker also encouraged everyone to purchase a “Thank a Lineman” license plate from the local DMV which directly benefits the Foundation.

Before closing, Mr. Chalker shared a story of one of the patients in the Burn Center and invited all of us to take a tour of the facility to learn more about the great work they are doing.

The speaker for next week will be Colonel Shaw Pick who will update us on the activities at Fort Gordon.

President Shanda led us in reciting the four-way test and then adjourned the meeting.
