Meeting Minutes

President Leland Malchow rang the bell and called the meeting to order. Tom Clark gave the pledge and invocation Thanks to our inside challenger, Lowell Greenbaum and the outside challenger, Master Buick GMC, the club raised $338.25 for CART at our last meeting.  This week the inside challengers are Brittany Burnette and Betty Dyches.

President Leland also announced that Jim Davis, CEO of University Hospital, and guest speaker a few weeks back, talked about the CART Fund at his office.  Employees then took up a collection and contributed $550 from UH in memory of Jim’s mother, Mary Louise Davis.

James Heffner introduced our guest and visiting RotariansTom Clark gave the Sunshine Report and delivered a stirring recital of the poem Ragged Old Flag.  He brought the crowd to their feet with a standing ovation.

President Leland then introduced District Governor Margaret Jacobs who presented the club with two awards.  The first one for increasing our CART Fund giving by 20% and the second one from the Rotary Foundation for our efforts to support End Polio Now.

While at the podium, she took a moment to thank the club for their ongoing support.  She specifically thanked us for helping with the global grant, which provided $283,000 to Puerto Rico to help farmers increase production to levels high enough to support the entire country.  Improved irrigation and clean water will help them achieve this goal.  In addition, she remarked on the success of the MAPS program, which is helping distribute lifesaving medications through eight clinics in Georgia including St. Vincent DePaul Clinic in Augusta.

New Members:

Wes Brown introduced Josh Nolan; Executive Director of Youth Development for the Family Y, and Janice Jackson introduced Marshall Ramon Lamkin as our newest members.

Program:

President Leland recognized Anna Reeves, as our newest Will Watt Fellow and thanked her for the job she did hosting our GRSP Student this year.

He also presented Patrick Cullinan and Anna Reeves as our newest Paul Harris Fellows and recognized Randy Hatcher with the Paul Harris +3 distinction.

President Leland presented the Kemp Puryear Distinguished Rotarian Award to Patrick Cullinan for his work coordinating the human trafficking seminar for law enforcement, serving on the Program Committee, serving as Chair of the Community Service Committee, and for being one of the leading ticket sellers for our Signature Fundraiser.

Each year since 2011 the award, which is named in honor of Bill Kemp and Jim Puryear, is awarded to the Rotarian who exemplifies Rotary’s call to service and demonstrates a principle commitment to the four-way test.  Congratulations to Patrick!

Following all announcements and presentations, President Leland called on all former club Presidents from any other Rotary Clubs to stand and be recognized.  We were honored to have many former Presidents now serving our club.

He then asked our Past Presidents to form a line and begin the annual tradition of Passing the Gavel.  As the gavel made its way to the podium, each Past President introduced themselves and gave their year as President.  When the gavel reached President Leland, he officially handed it over to new club President Scott Williams.

Scott thanked Leland for his year of service and presented him with a gift bag as a token of our appreciation for all he has done for the club.  He also gave him a plaque to commemorate his time as President and then officially bestowed upon him his new title of Immediate Past President.

Thank you Leland for a wonderful Rotary year!

President Scott reminded the club we will not meet on 7/1 because of the July 4 holiday and when we meet again on July 8 we will have our annual Club Assembly.

President Scott led us in reciting the four-way test and then adjourned the meeting.
