Meeting Minutes

President Leland Malchow rang the bell and called the meeting to order. Robert Osborne gave the pledge and invocation. Robert also gave a touching tribute to the soldiers who landed in Normandy on D-Day. Chris McKinney also shared a story about his uncle who at the age of 19 stormed Omaha Beach on D-Day.  The club remembered and thanked all of those who served and sacrificed their lives that day. James Hefner welcomed our guests and visiting Rotarians. Thanks to our inside challenger, Forester Adams and the outside challenger, MAI Risk Advisors, the club raised $287.40 for CART at our last meeting. This week the inside challenger is Sonny Tucker and our outside challenger is Matt Guzman, Audi Sales Manager.

Announcements:

• Jerry Woods presented President Leland with a flag from the Rotary Club of St. Andrews.
• President Leland called on Lenya Larson our GRSP student to come forward and receive a flag from our club.  Lenya has finished her Rotary year and will be heading home soon. We have enjoyed having her this year. 

Program:

President Leland called on club member Dr. Angela Pringle, Superintendent of the Richmond County Board of Education to provide our program.  Dr. Pringle arrived as Superintendent in 2014 and immediately recognized a need for school choice in order to help the Board accomplish their mission of “building a world-class school system through education, collaboration, and innovation”. 

In 2014, there were only a couple of options for students if they did not want to attend their “zoned” school.  If they were not accepted to one of the magnet schools, most left the school system by either leaving the area or enrolling in private school.  In order to retain and attract new students, the Board began expanding its options to include the Marian E Barnes Career Center for skilled trades, the Cyber Academy, STEM programs, International Baccalaureate, and JROTC programs just to name a few.

These changes have resulted in enrollment increasing for the first time since 2011.  There are now over 7,000 students participating some type of choice program.  Dr. Pringle credited her Board, as well as, the Chamber of Commerce for this success.  The Board has been recognized across the state for their effectiveness and accomplishments.  The Chamber has been instrumental in working with the Business Education Advisory Board to support the system.

Dr. Pringle attributed this success to the Board and system employees creating and implementing a strategic plan focused on increasing enrollment, increasing opportunities, and increasing awareness within the community. 

Following the presentation, President Leland led us in reciting the four-way test and then adjourned the meeting. 

Our next meeting will be June 10 and our speaker with be Special Agent Steve Foster who will talk to us about Cyber Security.
