Meeting Minutes
President Leland Malchow rang the bell and called the meeting to order. Tim Owings gave the pledge and invocation. Jeff Simless welcomed our guests and visiting Rotarians. Thanks to our inside challenger, Neita Mulherin and the outside challenger, Fran Forehand, the club raised $324 for CART at our last meeting. This week the inside challenger is Robert Osborne and our outside challenger is Judge Carl Brown. Gould Hagler gave our Sunshine Report.
Announcements:
- Rotary Golf Tournament will be held Tuesday May 7, 2019 at the River Club in North Augusta. Sign-up sheets are on the table.
- Since there was no meeting last week due to Masters Week, President Leland asked members to share any stories from the tournament. Several members shared their experiences from last week as well as fun stories from the past.
Program:
Sue Parr introduced our guest speaker, State Representative Barry Fleming.
Rep. Fleming is a resident of Harlem, Georgia, a two-time graduate of UGA, and a local attorney. He serves on several key committees including Judiciary, Appropriations, Governmental Affairs, and Rules. During the legislative cycle, nearly 2,000 bills were introduced with approximately 10% being passed by both the House and Senate.
Some of the key accomplishments included setting up a statewide business court, moving forward with new voting machines and procedures, and passing the “heartbeat” bill. He also commented that this session in particular was unique because we have a new Governor, Lt. Governor, and Secretary of State following last year’s election.
He concluded his presentation by taking questions from the audience.
Following the presentation, President Leland led us in reciting the four-way test and then adjourned the meeting.
Next week’s program will be Lynn Bailey with the Richmond County Board of Elections. Jim Davis from University Hospital will speak on April 29.
