SIGNATURE FUNDRAISING RAFFLE
NEXT MONDAY FEBRUARY 11 IS OUR LAST MEETING BEFORE THE RAFFLE

President Leland updated the club on our efforts selling tickets for the raffle.  So far, we have 90 members committed to buy or sell 470 tickets towards our goal of 500 tickets.  The drawing will be held Valentine’s Day 2019.  Everyone who has committed to 3 tickets or more was presented a special Rotary pin.

It was announced that our annual Valentines Party will be held at Mercedes Benz of Augusta and will precede the drawing for the car that is scheduled to take place at 6:00.  Invitations will follow today’s meeting.  As a reminder, proceeds from this event are benefit Child Enrichment of Augusta.

PAUL HARRIS RECOGNITION

President Leland recognized Janice Jackson as our newest Paul Harris Fellow and presented Neita Mulherin with her Paul Harris plus 6 pin.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

President Leland shared a picture of TR Ready in India where he met up with the members of the group study exchange program who visited us last year.

PROGRAM

Rotarian Shelly Berry introduced our speaker Daniel Rogers, Scout Executive for the Georgia Carolina Council.  Mr. Rogers began his presentation by asking all former scouts and scout leaders to stand and be recognized.  The club was well represented with the majority of the room standing.

He thanked our club not only for their daily service, but also for their efforts nearly 100 years ago in founding the Boy Scout Council in Augusta.  The year 2020 will officially mark the 100th anniversary of scouting in our area and several events and activities are being worked on to celebrate this milestone.

Mr. Rogers also addressed the fundamental changes that the Boy Scouts of America are facing.  Just this year, scouting has been opened up to girls.  He reminded us that the Scout Oath, Law, and Mission have not changed, but due to the ever-increasing demand for inclusion and participation, they have opened up more programs for girls to join.

Prior to this year, girls already participated in large numbers in both the Cub Scout and Explorer Programs.  This year marks the first enrollees in the Boy Scouts.

Mr. Rogers reported that the Augusta Council is comprised of 9 paid staff members and over 1200 volunteers.  Anyone interested in participating as a volunteer should contact the council.  He compared the scouting slogan of Do a Good Turn Daily with Rotary’s Service above Self and reported that during 2018, local area scouts logged over 15,000 hours of community service.

The Council is currently working to add a dining hall to the Knox Scout Reservation in order to increase the number of campers served each year.  Based on statistics from other camps in the southeast, we should be able to increase the number of campers served each year once the facility is finished.  A concert featuring Balsam Range to raise funds for the dining hall will take place on April 18 at the Miller Theater.
