 CART

At our last meeting, we raised $467.83 for CART thanks to Inside Challenger Andy Carrier with the Georgia State Patrol and Outside Challenger Deputy Coroner Mitchell Freeman of the Richmond County Coroner’s Office. We will continue raising money and awareness for Alzheimer’s this week through contributions to the blue bucket. This week’s Inside Challenger is Neita Mulherin and our Outside Challenger is Anna Reeves and the Augusta Women’s Club.

SMASH ALZHEIMER’S

John Whitwell reported on the exciting Smash Alzheimer’s fund raising campaign to help the CART Fund give more grants to researchers to help find a cure for Alzheimer’s. The idea is similar to the Ice Bucket Challenge from a few years ago. The idea is for each of us to make a video, post it on social media then challenge others in our networks to make a donation and do the same. John showed a video and asked that each of us either copy and paste the following message or write something ourselves, but be certain to add the website where donations can be made.  The hashtags #SmashAlzheimers , #SmashAlz , and #TheCARTFund should be added to each message.

“I want to make a difference and find a cure for this terrible disease. Through the CART Fund (Coins for Alzheimer’s Research Trust), which provides grants to Alzheimer’s research, we are raising money to help find a cure. 100% OF THE FUNDS DONATED GO TO RESEARCH!

The idea is to make a video of you smashing something (anything you want), make a donation at www.smashalzheimers.com or www.smashalz.com , post it on social media, and then challenge and tag at least 3 others to do the same. Together we will find a cure and Smash Alzheimer’s! PLEASE MAKE AND SHARE YOUR OWN VIDEOS! How creative can you be? Remember to recycle.

COLLEGE PICK ‘EM

Report given by John Simless, who himself was the winner last week. Current standings were available at the sign-in table.

BOY SCOUTS HONOR

Five (5) spots are still available at the Rotary table for any members interested in attending the Boy Scout Gala at the Foundry on Boy Scout Road on November 2, 2018 where Mr. & Mrs. T.R.Reddy will be honored.  Interested members should e-mail Peggy Whitehurst or President Leland.

PROGRAM

Rotarian Lowell Greenbaum introduced today’s speaker Dr. Lee Ann Caldwell who, with co-author James W. Garvey and photographer James R. Lockhart, have created AUGUSTA, a 50th anniversary project of Historic Augusta, Inc.  The book is richly illustrated with archival images and current views of our community to provide an overview of Augusta’s history through its architecture from the 18th to the late 20th centuries (including color photographs of 91 homes and buildings in the area).  The book may be ordered at www.historicaugusta.org/augusta .

ANNOUNCEMENTS

There will be no meeting on either November 12 (Veterans Day) or November 19 (Thanksgiving Holiday week).

The program for our November 5 meeting will present an exciting opportunity in which Augusta Mercedes Benz, the Mac Bowman Foundation, and the Augusta Rotary Club partner to help raise money for child enrichment.  The meeting will feature a presentation by Kari Vila-Brooke about the great work being performed by child enrichment activities.

Our November 26 meeting will feature Jim Hull, member, Georgia Board of Regents.

WRAP-UP

President Leland led the club in the 4 way test: First: Is it the truth? Second: Is it fair to all concerned? Third: Will it build goodwill and better friendships? Fourth: Will it be beneficial to all concerned?
