Meeting Minutes

President Leland Malchow rang the bell to call the meeting to order. Tim Owings gave the Pledge and Invocation. Patrick Cullinan introduced the guests, visiting Rotarians, and Interact Students. Brad Means gave the Sunshine Report. At our last meeting the inside CART challenger was Matt Barrett and Elisabeth Barrett Realty was the outside challenger. This week the inside challenger is club member Bob Baisden and the outside challenger is W.R. Toole Engineers.

Faye Hargrove introduced our newest member, Kayla Cooper, Staff Attorney for Augusta Utilities.  District Governor Margaret Jacobs joined them on stage and welcomed Kayla to the club.

  • President Leland called on Jeff Simless for an update on our weekly football pick’em.  We had 58 participants in week 5. If you do not receive the email by noon on Tuesday, please email Ashley Duren or Jeff. Our week 5 winner was Jimmy Richards who picked 8 out of 10 games correctly and won in a 4-way tiebreaker.  Susan Rice remains our overall leader at 75%.
  • President Leland reminded the club that our October 15 meeting will be from 5:30-7:30 in the same location and will enjoy a wine and craft beer tasting along with live music. More info will follow and everyone is asked to RSVP to Leigh Porterfield.
  • Leland congratulated Scott Sidle for his wonderful production of “Anything Goes” performed last weekend by the Augusta Players.
  • President Leland called on Wes Brown who spoke about the upcoming Merit Badge Clinic being held December 1st. Wes will be coordinating with the Waynesboro, Millen, and Augusta West clubs to put on this event.  If you are interested in helping, please contact Wes.
  • Petra and Phil from the Columbia County Rotary Club attended to speak about their upcoming Golf Fore a Smile tournament benefiting The Alliance for Smiles. Flyers were on the table for anyone interested in playing or sponsoring.

President Leland called on Rett Harbeson to introduce our speaker, District Governor Margaret Jacobs.

DG Jacobs has a long list of personal and professional accomplishments including 24 years of service to Rotary.  She followed in the footsteps of her parents who were both Rotarians and Paul Harris Fellows.

She spoke of the many projects underway to help others including helping farmers in Puerto Rico become self-sufficient, providing flood relief, working with a women’s group in Nepal, and installing water pumps in Uganda just to name a few.  She thanked our club for providing over $500,000 in funding to the Rotary Foundation to help with projects like these, as well as, our own local projects.

DG Jacobs announced that District 6920 now has an eClub for those who need a makeup or are looking for a little flexibility with the meeting schedule.  In closing, she reminded all of us to take care of ourselves, because we cannot help others if we do not take time to focus on ourselves.

We will not meet next Monday October 8 because of Columbus Day.  Our next meeting will be October 15 and we will celebrate Oktoberfest with wine and beer starting at 5:30.  Our next regular meeting will be held on October 22 and will feature club member Dr. Zach Kelehear discussing the importance of bees.

The meeting was adjourned with the Four Way Test.
