Meeting Minutes
President Leland rang the bell and called the meeting to order. The pledge and invocation was given by David Hudson. Eddie Bussey welcomed our guests and visiting Rotarians. Thanks to Natalie Paine / Jeanette Cummings and the outside challenger, Comfort Keepers, the club raised $300.00 for CART at our last meeting. Tom Clark gave our Sunshine Report.
Announcements
President Leland introduced new member Tony Lever. Welcome back to Rotary, Tony Lever!
Patrick Cullinan introduced our guest speaker Terry Childers, Community Representative, Bradford Health Services. Terry discussed the opioid / heroin crisis in our county. Terry said that more than 64,000 opioid overdose deaths occur each year, with greater than 150 deaths per day. Opioid overdose deaths are the number one cause of death for Americans under the age of 50. Terry discussed how the average American becomes addicted to prescription painkillers and then transitions to heroin when the prescription runs out. On the street, Fentanyl is mixed with heroin, without the buyer’s knowledge. Fentanyl is 50 times more additive than heroin and is proving to be deadly. Terry discussed the perfect storm of prescribed opioids with a peak of 282 million prescriptions in 2012. Terry proposed treating addiction as a disease and having empathy for addicts. He also discussed treatment strategies.
Following the presentation, President Leland led us in reciting the four way test and then adjourned the meeting.
The next meeting will be July 30th. Dayton Sherrouse, Executive Director will speak about the Augusta Canal.
