President Ed called on Zach Kelehear to discuss a Paul Harris Fellow incentive being offered by the District which matches contributions up to $500. More information will be sent out to club members and everyone is encouraged to contribute in order to earn their Paul Harris designation or reach the next level.
President Ed called on Tim Owings to discuss the Rotary Citation and he gave instructions on completing the tracking sheets on the table.
- President Ed recognized LaVerne Gaskins and her committee members who read books to children at Floyd Elementary School.
- He also announced the next Board meeting is March 13th at 4:30 at Cranston Engineering and the Citation Committee is meeting today immediately following our club meeting.
- President Ed commended Kevin Grogan on a fantastic event celebrating the 25th anniversary of the Morris Museum of Art. He also recognized Sue Parr, Richmond County Chamber of Commerce, and Laverne Gold, United Way, for their recent annual meetings that were huge successes.
- Lastly, he thanked Chief Chris James, Susan Everitt, and Susan Jernigan for their work this past week installing smoke detectors in Old Town.
President Ed called on Janice Jackson to introduce our guest speaker, Mr. Hawthorne Welcher Jr., with the City of Augusta Housing and Community Development (AHCD). Mr. Welcher is a native Augustan with twenty years of experience in community development.
Mr. Welcher cleared up any confusion between his agency and the Augusta Housing Authority (AHA), which primarily deals with public housing and Section 8 housing. The AHCD oversees federal funds received by the city and reviews applications before awarding those funds to various housing projects. The AHCD operates in four key areas; housing, support services, finance, and redevelopment. Mr. Welcher presented slides of various housing projects that included transforming existing neighborhoods, as well as, developing new residential, commercial, and retail projects from the ground up.
He remained after the meeting to answer questions and discuss any of these projects in more detail.
Our next meeting will be March 12th and the speaker will be Glenn Parker, Director of the City of Augusta Recreation and Parks.
The meeting was adjourned with the Four Way Test.
