Meeting Minutes
President Ed Presnell rang the bell and called the meeting to order. Robert Osborne led the club in the pledge and invocation. Andy Carrier introduced our guest and visiting Rotarians and called on Willie Williams to introduce our Richmond Academy Interact students. Thanks to our inside challenger Eddie Bussey, and our outside challenger Joyce Tutt Cherry we raised $318.66 for CART at our last meeting. This week the inside challenger is Robert Osborne and the outside challenger is South State Bank. Richard Rogers gave our Sunshine Report and shared the first Thanksgiving in 1621 when the Pilgrims and the Wampanoag Indians gathered for a harvest celebration. The Wampanoag Indians treated the Pilgrims well, sharing technology and living customs. Jeff Simless provided a week eleven Football Follies update. President Ed Presnell was the weekly winner, selecting 80% of the winning teams. Clay Jolly is leading for the year with 68% of winning teams picked. Only 6 of 49 that participated picked Georgia to beat Auburn. Jeff presented President Ed with passes for lodging at Holiday Inn Express, courtesy of TR Reddy. President Ed asked Rotarian Jeanette Cummings to come forward to receive her Paul Harris Fellow + 2 award. Jeanette has also received the Rotary International Benefactor award for support of the Rotary Foundation Endowment.
NEW MEMBERS:
President Ed called on Sue Par to introduce our newest member Rick Lowe. Rick is CEO of Select Specialty Hospital. Rick has 35 years experience in the healthcare field and moved to Augusta from Columbus GA where he served as Chief Administrative Officer at St. Francis Hospital. Rick has served as a past President of Rotary.
President Ed called on Jeff Spears to introduce our newest member Gene McManus. Gene established AP Wealth a personal financial management company. He is married to Ann Marie and has five children. Gene has served as a past President of Kiwanis.
President Ed called on Ashlee Duren to introduce our newest member Steve Wade. Steve is President of The Augusta Chronicle and has been a guest speaker to the club.
President Ed welcomed Rick, Jeff and Steve to the club.
ANNOUNCEMENTS:
- President Ed announced the Golden Harvest “CARING ROSE WEEK” November 13-18.
- Happy Thanksgiving! Our next meeting will be November 27. Our speaker will be Author Randolph G. Russell and his topic will be “American History and Civics Literacy (American History in No Time).
President Ed called on Rotarian Dr. Paul Dainer to introduce our speaker for the day, Daniell Wong Moores, to share her program Breathe Easy Augusta. Daniel has been working since 2012 on a smoke-free ordinance for Richmond County to protect people from second-hand smoke. Richmond County does not have a smoking ordinance other than the Georgia state law that prohibits smoking in some enclosed public places and workplaces. Smoking is allowed in restaurants and bars that do not admit or employ people under 18 years old. Daniell shared statistics on Richmond County that indicate the 78% of nonsmokers is 10% behind the national average and that Richmond County ranks 132nd in Georgia on health. Evidence suggests that smoke-free laws can reduce heart attack and stroke by 15%. She also shared statistics that indicate that a smoking ordinance does not create a negative impact on business but is an investment in the future of Augusta. Daniell asked for support to pass a smoking ordinance in Richmond County. You can view the ordinance at no-smoke.org
President Ed presented Danielle Wong Moores with a book to be placed in the library in her honor.
President Ed led us in reciting the four-way test and then adjourned the meeting.
