President Ed Presnell rang the bell and called the meeting to order. President ED asked that we stand for a moment of silence and rang the bell in honor of our Rotarian, past President Hammy Kuhlke, and past Rotarian Menard Ihnen. Erick Montgomery led the club in the pledge and invocation. Patrick Cullinan introduced our guest visiting Rotarians. President Ed also welcomed the media to today's meeting. Thanks to our inside challenger Forrester Adams, MAI Risk Advisers and our outside challenger Dickinson Architects we raised $297.93 for CART at our last meeting. This week the inside challenger is Eddie Bussey and the outside challenger is Joyce Tutt Cherry. Brad Means gave our Sunshine Report and reminded us of No-Shave November to encourage participants to donate the money they would typically spend on shaving to cancer research.
President Ed called on Rotarian Dr. Lowell Greenbaum to introduce our speaker for the day, Mayor Hardie Davis. Mayor Davis shared that he named September 23 as Dr. Lowell Greenbaum day.
Mayor Davis earned a BS in Electrical Engineering from Georgia Tech and a Doctorate of Ministry Degree from the Christian Life School of Theology in Columbus. He has served for three years as state Representative, five years as state Senator and is in the third year of his first term as Mayor of Augusta.
Mayor Davis shared “One Augusta” and told what is happening in Augusta. He spoke of the Hyatt Place hotel, the Georgia Cyber Innovation and Training Center, new restaurant announcements, project Jackson in North Augusta, and other soon to be announced projects that represent private and public investment in Augusta. Mayor Davis shared his vision of a move from an economy of Medicine and Military to one of technology and innovation. When speaking on where we are going, conversations are all "Cyber, Cyber, Cyber". We have not focused on one entrepreneurial community and an investment in our people to jump-start new businesses. Mayor Davis recognized our member Barry White, President and CEO of the Augusta Convention and Visitors Bureau, for his success in bringing new business to Augusta. Mayor Davis shared his thoughts on all Augusta and the possibilities of building a new arena on the Regency Mall property. In closing, Mayor Davis shared that progress always involves risk and that you cannot steal second base if you keep your foot on first.
President Ed presented Mayor Davis with a book to be placed in the library in his honor.
Jeff Simless provided a week ten Football Follies update. Phil Wahl was the weekly winner, selecting 80% of the winning teams. John Whitwell is leading with 69% of winning teams picked.
- President Ed thanked all who were able to attend past President Hammy Kullke’s funeral. Former member Rosie Messer delivered a beautiful eulogy.
- Rotarian Faye Hargrove received The Volunteer Excellence Award from the Augusta City Classic last week.
Our next meeting will be November 13. Our speaker will be Danielle Wong Moores and her program will be Breathe Easy Augusta and The Great American Smokeout.
