Meeting Minutes

President Ed Presnell rang the bell and called the meeting to order. Jim Price led the club in the pledge and invocation. Clay Jolly introduced our guest visiting Rotarians. Thanks to our inside challenger Laverne Gold and our outside challenger Sonny Tucker of Gerald Jones the club raised $107.66 for CART at our last meeting. This week the inside challenger is Forrester Adams, MAI Risk Advisers and the outside challenger is Dickinson Architects. Barclay Bishop gave our Sunshine Report and announced member birthdays and club anniversaries. Barclay asked that we continue to support providing cooling vest to the Richmond County sheriff’s office and announced that Deek Copenhaver has been named the Interim Director of Richmond County economic development.

Jeff Simless provided a week nine Football Follies update. Dora Hogg was the weekly winner, selecting 80 percent of the winning teams. John Whitwell and David Hogg are in a two-way tie for second with 70% of winning teams picked.

NEW MEMBER:

President Ed called on Anna Reeves to introduce our newest member Kurt Mueller. Kurt attended the Citadel and Saint Louis University. Kurt established Consolidated Planning in 2012. Kurt is married to Megan Mueller and has two sons 1 and 4 years old. President Ed welcomed Kurt to the club.

ANNOUNCEMENTS AND INTRODUCTIONS:

  • President Ed asked that we pick up membership rosters at today’s meeting. 
  • He also thanked Shanda Vaughn and the Family of Rotary for organizing the very nice canal boat cruise.  
  • Jakob Fahl our Rotary GRSP student needs a ride to and from Atlanta this weekend. Please call President Ed if you can help.

Kevin Grogan introduced our member and speaker for the day, Anne Catherine Murray.

Ann Catherine is from Chapel Hill NC, graduated from Washington and Lee University and earned a Masters degree in historic preservation at the University of Georgia. Ann Catherine has helped lead rehabilitation of several historic Augusta buildings including Enterprise Mill and Sutherland Mill. She has served as the executive director of Symphony Orchestra Augusta since 2015. Ann Catherine spoke on SOA and the Miller Theatre the new home of SOA. The Miller opened in 1940 and closed in 1984 has been through a $23 million restoration funded by generous private donations, grants from several foundations, historic preservation tax credit and about $5 million from the SPLOST. Maestro Dink Meyer from Duluth Minnesota joined SOA as Music Director in 2017 also serves as Music Director of the Duluth Symphony Orchestra. Dirk and his wife Paula are making Augusta their home.

Ann Catherine then introduced Marty Elliot the General manager of the Miller Theatre. Marty joined the Miller team with more than twenty-five years of experience in venue and event management. She has served as the leadership of Fifth Third Bank stadium and executive director of Kennesaw State sports and entertainment. Marty shared her enthusiasm for the future success of the Miller. Her goal is to bring seventy events per year to the Miller in dance, theatrical, comedy and family.

President Ed welcomed Kurt to the club.

President Ed Reminders:

  • Jakob Fahl our GRSP student needs a ride to Atlanta this weekend.
  • Our next meeting will be November 6. Our speaker will be Mayor Hardie Davis.

President Ed led us in reciting the four-way test and then adjourned the meeting.
