Meeting Minutes

President Ed Presnell rang the bell and brought the meeting to order at 12:15 PM, Monday, 18 September 2017. Robert Osborne led the club in the pledge and invocation. A.K. Gulati introduced visiting Rotarians and member guests. President Ed announced that last week we raised $308.85 for Cart thanks to inside challenger Dave Brendza and outside challenger ADP. This week the inside challenger is Barclay Bishop and the outside challenger is Fat Mans Café. Gould Hagler gave the Sunshine report.

President Ed called on Jeff Simless who reported the year to date results for our Football Follies competition. After three weeks, Mark Giliam is the overall leader. Mark, Ridge Whitehurst, and Chris James were the weekly winners for the first three weeks of the season.

President Ed called on Tim Owings to talk about the Rotary Celebration Citation. This recognition program replaces the old points system used to track club activities. Tim asked everyone to take a brochure from the table and he will continue to provide updates on the program over the coming weeks.

Announcements:

  • President Ed welcomed Dee Bruker back to the club and our GRSP student Jakob Fahl.
  • He thanked Shanda Vaughn for planning Rotary Night at the Greenjackets game which was enjoyed by nearly 40 participants.
  • He also reminded the club to be looking for potential candidates to be considered for membership. We currently have three approved for membership and 3 or 4 more pending.
  • Finally, President Ed asked club board members to stay after for a quick meeting once we adjourn.

Program:

President Ed called on Dr. Angela Pringle to introduce our speaker, Sean Frantom, who is the Development Director for the Ronald McDonald House and an Augusta Richmond County Commissioner.

Sean talked about the new Ronald McDonald House located on the campus of Augusta University and across the parking lot from the Children’s Hospital of Georgia. He described the house’s amenities and encouraged everyone to come take a tour.

Ronald McDonald House serves over 6 million families worldwide each year and locally over 1,000 families use the facility. The house has an average occupancy rate of 88% and has nearly 300 groups who volunteer each year to cook and care for families.

Sean discussed the programs offered at the house including Meals that Mend, Food & Supplies Pantry, Playroom Program, Hotel & Transportation, Augusta Cares for Kids, and Happy Wheels. He encouraged everyone to consider supporting one of these programs. He also announced events coming up in 2018 to raise funds for the house, including, Wine, Women and Shoes, the Plane Pull, and the Red Shoe Golf Tournament. Anyone interested in helping can call or visit the house.

Our speaker next week will be District Governor Hamsa Thota.

The meeting was adjourned following the recital of the Four Way Test.
