Program: Erick Montgomery introduced our guest speaker, Ms. Kaye Menchew, who is an historian and author of A President in our Midst:  Franklin Delano Roosevelt in Georgia. Ms. Menchew currently serves as Chair of the Friends of Georgia Archives and History. She has received numerous awards including the Georgia Historical Records Advisory Board Lifetime Achievement Award and Distinguished Service Award from the National Association of Government Archivists.

Ms. Menchew shared pictures and stories from her book detailing the connection between President Roosevelt and Warm Springs, Georgia.  She told stories of his life and times before becoming president. He was stricken with polio in his early twenties and would spend the rest of his life trying to find relief from the constant pain.

Having spent some time around coastal Georgia, he was familiar with the area. It was recommended he visit Warm Springs to see if the waters would help with is pain. Roosevelt enjoyed Warm Springs so much that he became a regular visitor and with his support and name recognition, Warm Springs became the place to go to for treatment of polio related ailments.

The city and the state began making investments in the area and developed a first class treatment facility and amenities. While resting on the porch of “the little White House” in Warm Springs, the President slumped over and passed away.

Warm Springs has a special connection with Augusta, as Augusta University Medical Center has a partnership to manage the medical facility there.

Next week’s meeting is cancelled due to the International Convention taking place in Atlanta. Our next meeting will be June 19th and President Jennifer will give the year in review update.

The meeting was adjourned following the recital of the Four Way Test
