Meeting Minutes
President Jennifer Pennington rang the bell and called the meeting to order. The pledge and invocation was given by Barry White. President Jennifer gave a "Rotary Moment" and told how a contribution of $11,500 from the Rotary Club of Osake-East, Japan allowed for installation of solar panels on the roof of a dormitory in Hospicio de San Joses in Manilla that houses approximately 50 developmentally and physically disable children. The panels provide 525 kilowatt-hours of electricity per month, which helps to reduce costs of operating the institution. The gift provides savings that can be spent on care and treatment of more clients. Daniel Rhodes welcomed our guests and visiting Rotarians. Thanks is given to James Heffner for raising the club $180.23 for CART at our last meeting. This week the inside challenger is George Hall. No outside challenger was mentioned. Gould Hagler presented the Sunshine Report.
Announcements:
- President Jennifer recognized and congratulated the winners of the recent Golf Tournament. She also thanked those that assisted and donated items.
- 1st place went to Andrew Williams, Bob Evans, Hal Scott, and Faye Hargrove.
- Thanks to the following Rotarians that donated prizes: Tom Denlinger, Jerry Rogers, Hal Scott, Kevin Grogan, Jimmy Richards, and Stacy Tallent.
- It was announced that a RYLA Committee meeting would take place after the Rotary meeting.
- Ed Presnell mentioned that all are invited to attend the International Convention in Atlanta from June 10th to June 14th. You can find information at reconvention.org or at the district website.
Program:
Time Owings introduced our guest speaker for the day, Dr. Angela Pringle, Superintendent for Richmond County Schools. Dr. Pringle reviewed an update of the Annual report including the impact of the system to the community, that reading levels are different today, revision of curriculum, future strategies, achievements and successes, community engagement, communication, culture and workforce, and operational effectiveness. A few of the other areas she highlighted were that 19 schools showed improvement last year and that there were some increases in the graduation rate. She also mentioned the positive impact of Move On When Ready and the increase in choices for students such as the new implementation of IB at Hephzibah High School.
Following the presentation, President Jennifer state that the next meeting is on May 1st an that the speaker will be Jill Brown from the First Tee. Jill will be presenting, "Becoming an Ace Level and What It Takes To Get There."
President Jennifer led us in reciting the four way test.
