April 10, 2017
Past President John Whitwell rang the bell and brought the meeting to order at 12:15 PM, Monday, 10 April 2017. Jim Price led the club in the pledge and invocation. John Sebby introduced visiting Rotarians and member guests. Past President John reported that at our last meeting, we raised $144.16 with the support of inside challenger Ed Presnell and outside challenger MAI Advisors. This week the inside challengers are James Hefner with State Bank and Steve Hobbs. Richard Rogers gave the Sunshine report and shared his Masters Week experience with the club.
- Golf: We will hold our annual golf tournament on April 17th. Sign-up sheets are on the tables. We are also in need of some prizes. If you would like to donate one, see Frank Mulherin. There is no meeting that day and there will not be a sign-up sheet for non-golfers in our regular location.
Erick Montgomery introduced our guest speaker, Mr. Sonny Seals, who is co-founder of Historic Rural Churches of Georgia. Mr. Seals and his longtime friend, Mr. George Hart, co-founded the non-profit with the mission of providing research, documentation, education, and preservation of Georgia's rural churches.
Mr. Seals shared stories and pictures of various churches in Georgia and provided a historical perspective on how the state was first settled. Over a 40 year period, nearly 35 million acres of land was acquired through various methods and redistributed in 200-400 acre tracts. During this time, churches became the center of the communities serving as a gathering place to dispense both religion and law and order. Much of Georgia's history is kept in the minutes and official records of the churches. He encouraged everyone to visit their website to learn about the history of these churches and find ways to get involved. At the conclusion of his presentation he addressed questions from the audience and was presented with a book that will be placed in the Augusta Library in his honor.
Next week's program will be our own club member, Dr. Angela Pringle, who will provide her annual report of the Richmond County School System.
The meeting was adjourned following the recital of the Four Way Test
