Meeting Minutes

President Jennifer rang the bell and brought the meeting to order at 12:15 PM, Monday, 27 March 2017

Pledge and Invocation: David Hudson asked that we recognize the natural beauty of our community at this time of year when the golf sports world is focused on Augusta

Rotary Moment: Member AK Gulati described the activities of a small club in New Delhi aimed at the assurance of available safe drinking water and children’s access to safe and effective heart care.

Guests/Visiting Rotarians: Clayton Jolly introduced visiting Rotarians and member guests, leading into a special announcement.

Special Announcement:  President Jennifer announced that our club had again been named a Gold Club for its works through its many committees.  The club was also awarded the CART award for highest giving this year, contributing $12,000 and over the over past 10 years our club has contributed approximately $100,000 to CART.

CART:

President Jennifer reported that at our last meeting, we raised $211.70 with the support of inside challenger Mark Gilliam.  This week the inside challenger is Ed Presnell and the outside challenger is MAU Advisors. She encouraged that we contribute to the blue buckets on our tables.

Sunshine Report:  Gould Hagler shared humorous tales experienced by Augustans renting out their houses for Masters visitors, including one of his own in which he was suspicious of someone attempting to rent his house anonymously using the Internet, only to eventually learn that the candidate renter was a fellow Club member.

New Member: President Jennifer announced a new Club member, Jim Laura, General Sales Manager at Augusta’s Fox54.  Member Paul Dainer introduced Jim.

Announcements:

District Conference Recap by Pam Lightsey: In a Special Presentation at our Club, Pam announced an award that had been made at the District meeting.  Club member and Past District Governor Bill Kemp received Rotary’s highest individual award.  Among his noted personal achievements was the creation of RotarAct, an activity in which hundreds of clubs world-wide now participate.  Bill’s wife was a Club guest today and stood with him as Club members stood applauding until Bill asked us to desist with a wave of his hand

Golf: We will hold our annual golf tournament on April 17th. Sign up sheets are on the tables.  We are also in need of some prizes.  If you would like to donate one, see Frank Mulherin

Hull Fund:  The Hull Fund committee will meet after the meeting today.

International Convention: Club members were invited to attend the International Convention which will be held this year in Atlanta on June 10th–14th, where Bill Gates will be the keynote speaker.  More information can be found at the riconvention.org or on the District website.

Program: Our Program for today was a presentation by Margaret Brown who for many years was the horticulturalist for the Augusta National.  She shared the history of the property – why it existed and why extensive ornamental shrubs and trees were its defining characteristics when it was purchased to create the Augusta National.  She also shared personal experiences with golfers and patrons.  Ms. Brown was introduced by Club member Ashlee Duren.

Reminders:

President Jennifer announced that there will be no meeting on the Monday of Masters Week. Our next meeting will be on April 10th when our speaker will be Sonny Seals who will discuss Historic Rural Churches of GA.

She then asked that we stand and join in the Four Way Test: Of all the things that we think, say or do, 1st: Is it the truth?  2nd: Is it fair to all concerned? 3rd: Will it build good will and better friendships? 4th: Will it be beneficial to all concerned?

She closed the meeting by ringing the Bell – Adjourn
