Meeting Minutes
President Billy rang the bell to call the meeting to order and mentioned that this is “Maternal and Childhood Health” Month. The pledge and invocation was given by Jim Price. Susan Jernigan welcomed our guests and visiting Rotarians.
CART: Thanks to last week’s inside challenger, David Fields we raised $164.96 for CART. This week the challengers are Billy Franke and Susan Jernigan. President Billy asked all club members to consider being the Cart Challenger. This is a great way to raise money for Alzheimer’s research and everyone is asked to help.
Brad Means gave our Sunshine Report.
Announcements:
- District Conference May 13-15th-Savannah Desoto Hilton. Raffle tickets are available for sale to help defray the cost of the event.
- Service Project -Phinizy Swamp-April 30th
- Our GRSP student, Zsolt, will need a ride to Hilton Head SC April 22 – 24th. If you are able to help please contact President Billy or Zsolt.
- The club will hold its annual golf tournament on May 16th. More details to follow.
President Billy Franke called on Mark Miller to introduce our guest speaker, club member Phil Wahl Jr., who is a native Augustan to share his memories growing up at the Augusta National Golf Club.
Phil shared stories and fond memories of his father, Phil Wahl Sr., who left Ohio in 1961 to accept the position of General Manager of the ANGC. Mr. Wahl graduated from Michigan State University with a degree in Hotel/Hospitality/Restaurant Management which prepared him for this unique opportunity in Augusta. Upon arrival, Mr. Wahl moved is wife and family into the Tennessee Cabin on the grounds of the club. After the first year, and as the family continued to grow, they moved into National Hills across from the club.
Phil shared several photos, mementos, and books from his personal collection. Many were signed with personal messages to his father from figures such as Bobby Jones, Clifford Roberts, and President Eisenhower. Following his presentation Phil donated a print of the ANGC circa 1960 to be auctioned off to the club. The auction netted $400 with proceeds to benefit the Hull Fund.
The meeting was adjourned by reciting the four way test.
