Meeting Minutes

President Jerry opened the meeting and called on Barry White who led the pledge and invocation.

Brett Montroy introduced the guests and visiting Rotarians. Greg DeLoach gave the Sunshine Report and shared some thoughts about the passing of Carl Sanders, the last Augusta native to serve as governor of Georgia.

President Jerry gave thanks to last week's Club Cart Challenger, Trex Bolix who helped us raise $241.65 for the fund. The Club CART Challenger for the meeting is Leland Malchow of Nimmons and Malchow, P.C.

Paul Wade introduced our Interact guests. Tim Owens reminded the members that his Holiday CDs will be available for the next few weeks and that their $25 cost will be donated in its entirety to Polio. The Salvation Army bell will be ringing at our December meetings. Checks will be welcome.

The Christmas Meeting will be moved back to December 22 in the hope that it will afford the membership the opportunity to bring family, especially kids and grandkids.

Ned Murray introduced guest speaker Steve O'Neal, Headmaster, Westminster Schools of Augusta. Steve came to Augusta from Dar es Salaam, Tanzania where he was running an international Christian college preparatory school. He had previously served as director of curriculum and upper school principal at Minnehaha Academy (PK-12) in Minneapolis MN.

Topic: Is your child getting the best possible education?

After speaking briefly about his introduction to Augusta and the Westminster School, Steve immediately broadened his presentation discussion to describe a collaborative effort being undertaken by three of Augusta's independent schools: Augusta Preparatory Day School, Episcopal Day School, and Westminster Schools of Augusta. The effort is entitled INDEPENDENT SCHOOLS of AUGUSTA: Consider the Possibilities.

Led by the Heads of each of the schools (all of whom were present at the meeting), the group recognized their common goals and problems as well as the likelihood of making progress toward those goals by working together. Their collective student bodies serve only a fraction of the families who can afford their tuitions, not to mention the financial assistance each school offers to qualified students. Their common goal is to attract more students to their collective population and not to take students from each other. They have embarked on educational and exposure activities to engage families in a more caring and interactive learning experience and educate them about exceptional individualized practices that will allow their children to excel in ways that lead to brighter futures.

No Meeting Next Week (Thanksgiving week). The next meeting will take place on December 1.

The meeting was adjourned following the recital of the Four-Way Test.
