Robert Osborne introduced the guest speaker, Dr. Harris Pastides, the President of the University of South Carolina. President Pastides started his presentation by recognizing the outstanding commitment and service of the Osborne family, in particular Robert's Grandfather, to USC. President Pastides went on to detail some of the challenges that are facing college presidents today relating to college affordability in economic declines. He stated that State appropriations for the College, approximately $93 million, has dropped to 6th place in funding. The #1 funding source is Out-of-State tuition. Other funding sources include regular tuition, grants, auxiliary, and philanthropy. President Pastides provided some areas that can keep colleges affordable, which include:
  • Encouraging every student to complete college on-time or less.
  • Encourage student to not change majors as often as the average is 3 times.
  • To remind students that they should know beforehand that a job with their major will be waiting for them.

President Pastides provided an overview of the new Darla Moore School of Business building recently built on campus. He described the new facility as a "World Class Building". As concerns athletics, President Pastides stated how proud he was for the College to be part of the SEC and how there is great use of the new SEC Network. He stated that athletics as the College benefits in funding of around $8 million per year. President Pastides concluded by stating his pride in being a Rotarian and Paul Harris Fellow and all that Rotary encompasses.

President Jerry stated that next week's speaker will be Neil Gordon from Buzz on Biz. He reminded that there will be a Board Meeting tomorrow morning.

The meeting was adjourned following the recital of the Four-Way Test.
