Meeting Minutes
President Jerry opened the meeting and called on Jeff Flowers who led the pledge and invocation. Chris Mckinney introduced the guests and visiting Rotarians. President Jerry gave thanks to last week?s Club CART Challenger, Russ Morgan, and our outside challenger, Regions Bank, who helped us raise $414.88 for the fund. This week?s CART Challenger is Bob Baisden Jr. and the outside challenger is R.W. Toole.
President Jerry called on Greg Deloach to give the Sunshine Report. Len Collins gave a report on behalf of the Family of Rotary Committee and surveyed the members present about future activities. Kevin Wade reported that the club sponsored 70 children through the Greater Augusta Partnership for Literacy. These kids, ages 0-5, will receive an age appropriate book on a monthly basis through GAPL?s partnership with the Dolly Parton Imagination Library. Kevin also invited club members to come read to children at the GRU Daycare on Monday 7/28/14 from 10:00-10:30. Anyone interested should contact him via phone or email.
Marc Miller introduced our guest speaker, Dr. Selina Smith, Director of the GRU Institute of Public and Preventive Health. Dr. Smith presented information on polio and the success in eliminating this disease. Over the last 25 years, there has been a dramatic reduction in the number of countries with new polio cases from 125 countries in 1998 to only 4 in 2008. New cases used to number over 1,000 per day and in 2010 there were only 250 total cases reported. This success is a direct result of programs such as Rotary?s Polio Plus which have increased fundraising and advocacy efforts to eradicate the disease. Thanks to the efforts of Rotary, as well as several large national donors, the governments around the world have contributed nearly $9 billion in resources to the cause.
Following the presentation, President Jerry reminded the club that the United Way meeting will take place on Monday 8/25 and we will hold our 100th anniversary celebration at the Legend?s Club on 9/22. Next week?s speaker will be Jeff Edgens from East Georgia State College.
The meeting was adjourned following the recital of the Four-Way Test.
