Guest Speaker/Program

Dr. Paul Danier introduced our guest speaker, Dr. Kimberly Atianzar. Dr. Atianzar is a physician at Augusta University Health and Assistant Professor at the Medical College of Georgia at Augusta University (AU). She presented information related to cardiothoracic surgery programs at AU, related to Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR). This is a contemporary approach to valve disease that allows for valve replacement without open heart surgery. The approach is relatively new with the first case completed in 2002. The procedure has been being done at AU for years and a unique approach at AU is that the patient does not have to undergo anesthesia. Typically patients are back home and on their feet within 24 hours. In 2019, clinical trials conducted cemented the  role of TAVR in the treatment of Aortic Valve Stenosis. This unique approach is ideal for patients that are ineligible for open heart surgery and is even an option for those that are eligible.

President Shanda led us in reciting the four-way test and then adjourned the meeting.
