Meeting Minutes

President Scott Williams rang the bell and called the meeting to order. Jeff Spears lead us in the pledge and invocation. Thanks to our inside challenger Dustin Young and outside challenger McKnight Construction Company, together we raised $297.00. This week our inside challenger is Chris Bird and our outside challenger is Spectra. Reyne’ Gallup introduced our guests and visiting Rotarians.

  • President Scott Williams introduced our GRSP student William Baerenholdt and led the club singing Happy Birthday to William for his 21st Birthday. Please make an effort to meet William.
  • Tom Clark gave the Sunshine Report.
  • Jeff Simless updated us on week 4 of the Football Follies/College Pic ‘em contest. We had 101 participants with Gene McManus winning this week, YTD leader is Ray Walters.
  • President Scott Williams congratulated Brenda Durant and her team for a job well done on the Arts in the Heart event this last weekend. President Scott reminded us the Octoberfest Social will be from October 5-7 pm on Monday. The social will be in place on our normal club meeting
  • Remember the Octobertfest Social from 5-7 pm on Monday, October 7th. This social will be in place of our normal lunch meeting for that day. Invitations will be emailed out soon.

Catherine Murray introduced our two guest speakers Dirk Meyer and Katherine Garcia from the Augusta Symphony and Miller Theatre.

Dirk Meyer is Music Director of Augusta Symphony and the Duluth Superior Symphony Orchestra in Minnesota. He has guest conducted many orchestras throughout the United States and abroad. Dirk talked about the upcoming 2020 schedule of concerts. 

  •  POPS! Series:
  • Oct. 17th - Raiders of the Lost Ark, Dec. 5th - The Texas Tenors, Feb. 13th - The Music of Billy Joel   March 12th - Revolution; The Beatles
  • Dirk announced they will be having 2- Family Concerts at Columbia County this year. The family concerts are perfect for introducing children to the Symphony.
  • Oct. 20th – Halloween at the Symphony, Feb. 23rd – Musical Fairy Tales
  • There will be 6 – concerts in the Symphony Series.

Katherine Garcia is Senior Event and Facility Services Manager with the Miller Theatre.

Katherine mentioned the Miller Theatre has hosted 150 events and 20 Symphony events in 20 months, 105,000 guest and 5.9 million in gross sales. The Miller Theatre has hosted local art shows and participated in the Arts in the Hearts festival. 21% of market is from out of town generating more than $2,000,000 impact for downtown.

Katherine discussed becoming a member for $99.00/year. Becoming a member means access to event notifications, exclusive ticket opportunities and other perks. You will receive a Fast Pass entry to all events, early access and best seats in the house.

They offer a volunteer program with 150 active volunteers saving the theatre $75,000 per year.

 The Knox Music Institute is housed in two floors above the Miller Theatre Box office and serves as small performance and lecture hall for the Augusta symphony as well as a rentable venue and office space for the Miller Theatre. It will also be the home of the Symphony’s Community Cord Music Therapy Program, which launched in the fall of 2019.

Following the program President Scott Williams led the club in the four-way test and adjourned the meeting.
