Connie Melear: The Hull fund was named for our First Club President, James M Hull. This Rotary Education Fund started in 1923 and has been a dedicated advocate of education in our community and throughout the world. The fund started as an education loan program, but has since also become involved in scholarships and grants. In keeping with the fund's bylaws and mission, all grants must have a clearly articulated educational purpose and must be vetted and approved by the trustees. We have given scholarships through GRSP, Augusta Partnership for Children and First Tee. Grants and been awarded to Ronald McDonald House, Boys and Girls Club, Gertrude Herbert Art Institute, Augusta Partnership for Literacy, and many others. Haskell Toporek, is the long-time chair. Other trustees are Connie Melear, Jeff Futrelle, Brinsley Thigpen, Eddie Booth Richard Rogers, and Larry Broyles. Long-serving Sec/Treas Dr Jim Puryear recently retired and has been succeeded by Steve Hobbs.

Sonny Tucker: CART, which stands for "Coins for Alzheimer Research Trust" involves 700 clubs from Georgia, North Carolina and South Carolina. Since its inception it has awarded $4.5 million for research. Our own Jim Puryear is on the foundation Board that awards the research funds.

Tim Owens presented information about Rotary International: Polio ? The President signed an omnibus appropriations bill that provides $205 million to support polio eradication in 2014. The US has contributed more than $2.3 billion since the mid 1980s when 125 countries were endemic and the disease afflicted 350,000. Today only 3 countries are endemic and their combined incidence fell to 157 cases. The Gates Foundation has already given more than $400 million to eradicate polio and today it is matching 2 for 1 every new dollar Rotary commits to polio eradication up to $35 million per year from 2013 through 2018. Since the beginning of Polio Plus in 1986, Rotarians have helped immunize more than 2 Billion children in 122 countries. For as little as $0.60, a child can be protected. According to ?Charity Navigator?, Rotary International is a 5-star charity with an overall rating of more than 92%.

Next week's speaker will be Steve O'Neil, Headmaster, Westminster Schools of Augusta.
