We particularly want to thank Mark Albertin of Scrapbook Video Productions for producing it, and the 100th Anniversary video committee for their hard work in supervising its production: Susan Jernigan, Erick Montgomery and Jennifer Pennington.

David Hudson gave a biography and personal recollections of James Hull.
DAVID HUDSON AND NEAL DICKERT ARE GOING TO TELL US SOMETHING ABOUT OUR CLUB’S FOUNDER, MR. JAMES M. HULL. BOTH DAVID AND NEAL KNEW MR. HULL AND HAD THE DISTINCT PLEASURE OF PRACTICING LAW WITH HIM FOR SEVERAL MONTHS BEFORE HE DIED.
DAVID CAME TO AUGUSTA AFTER LAW SCHOOL AND COMPLETING A CLERKSHIP FOR JUDGE GRIFFIN BELL ON THE FIFTH CIRCUIT U.S. COURT OF APPEALS. MILITARY SERVICE BROUGHT DAVID TO AUGUSTA, AND HE SERVED AS A CAPTAIN AND ARMY LAWYER AT FORT GORDON FOR TWO YEARS.
AFTER FINISHING HIS MILITARY DUTY, DAVID JOINED WHAT WAS THEN THE HULL, TOWILL, NORMAN, BARRETT & JOHNSON LAW FIRM, NOW KNOWN AS THE HULL BARRETT LAW FIRM, AND HAS PRACTICED LAW THERE FOR THE FOLLOWING FORTY YEARS. DAVID HAS BEEN A MEMBER OF OUR ROTARY CLUB SINCE 1977, AND IS A PAUL HARRIS FELLOW.
NEAL CAME TO AUGUSTA TO JOIN THE SAME FIRM AFTER GRADUATION FROM LAW SCHOOL IN 1974. WITH THE EXCEPTION OF NEAL’S ELEVEN YEARS OF SERVICE ON THE SUPERIOR COURT BENCH, HE HAS SPENT HIS ENTIRE CAREER WITH THIS FIRM. NEAL JOINED ROTARY IN 1982, IS A PAUL HARRIS FELLOW, AND SERVED AS THE CLUB’S PRESIDENT IN 1991-1992.

Often as we leave our meetings Monday afternoon we see dozens of children who are visiting the Augusta Canal Discovery Center. These children are experiencing an adventure that captures a forward thinking optimism that resulted in the development of the Augusta Canal. 100 years ago our Club was founded with that same optimistic view of our community. Through the years we have left a legacy of community involvement and economic development that mirrors the impact that the canal has had on the growth of our city. Because of this similar mission we decided that there is no better organization to partner with than the Augusta Canal Discovery Center. The Augusta Canal was a key engine of our economic growth but even more importantly it is a strategic asset for further recreational, economic and tourism growth. Our Board was impressed with the scope of the current recreational and educational opportunities the canal offers and even more impressed with the future plans for development of the canal.
The “Power of Water” movie shown in the Discovery Center Theater is the first exposure many guests and students have to the impact the canal had in the development of our city and we are excited about the opportunity to enhance that experience by helping renovate the theater and improve the quality of the movie. By understanding the potential that our forefathers saw in our area and the risks they took to build the canal we hope that today’s students will be motivated with the same forward thinking optimism.
We thank the Augusta Canal Authority for the opportunity to partner with them and their recognition of our partnership by naming the theater after the Rotary Club of Augusta. Last week we were pleased to announce a gift of $25,000 to the Augusta Canal Authority for these improvements. We look forward to seeing the fruit of this contribution in the lives of those who experience the “The Power of Water. ”
I’d like to now introduce Dayton Sherrouse – Executive Director of the Canal Authority to tell us more about how the gift is being used.

On September 23, 1914, The Rotary Club of Augusta met for the first time in the former Albion Hotel, located here. Organized by attorney James M. Hull and local businessmen the club promotes fellowship and service. Rotary began in Chicago in 1905 and supports community and economic development projects at home and abroad. The Augusta club sponsored the formation of four other Rotary clubs in the Augusta area. Over the years, the Augusta club established a Christmas Cheer fund, brought Boy Scouts and Junior Achievement to Augusta and has provided loans and scholarships to worthy college students. World peace, promotion of literacy, and the eradication of polio, Alzheimer’s disease and unsanitary living conditions have been major initiatives supported by Rotarians through the Rotary International Foundation. It is with great pride and pleasure I am introducing the second woman Rotary Foundation Trustee and the third woman elected to serve as a Rotary International Board Member (2012-14). She also was elected as the first women Vice President of Rotary for 2013/14.
- Dr. Anne L. Matthews is president of Matthews and Associates, an educational firm in Columbia, SC. She has three earned degrees, including a doctorate from the University of South Carolina. She is an educator by profession, an author of business texts, and a public speaker. Anne is a sustaining member, multiple Paul Harris Fellow, Major Donor, charter member of the Bequest Society and the Paul Harris Society, Benefactor, and a Ten Star Rotarian. Anne received The Rotary Foundation’s Citation for Meritorious Service, The Rotary Foundation’s Distinguished Service Award, and Rotary International’s highest honor, the Service Above Self award. In 2006, she was honored as District 7770’s Rotarian of the Year
- 1:10 Closing Jerry Rogers – It wasn’t easy to be forward looking and optimistic in 1914. World War 1 had just started and the world was in social and economic upheaval. Despite those challenges a group of men decided they could make a difference by starting a Rotary Club in Augusta Ga. Today we have seen just a glimpse of all that has been accomplished through their vision. We are blessed to say we have been a part of it.
