Quincy Murphy introduced our speaker, Todd Long, Planning Director of the Georgia Department of Transportation.
Todd began his remarks by explaining for Georgia to be attractive for future development, transportation is an important element and the economy is directly related to future development. Gas tax fuels transportation funding. With more and more gas efficient vehicles, gas tax revenue is declining. If we cannot fund our plans, they sit on the shelf. A one-cent regional sales tax for the purpose of transportation will be brought before voters in the next statewide primary, July 2012. If passed by all 12 regions, $1.5 billion will go to transportation and the very long list of repair and building projects can be accomplished. Business leaders must get behind this effort if it will stand any chance of passing. Augusta is on the verge of being a great city. Industry is looking to locate in Georgia and transportation is a huge issue. Todd encouraged the club to learn all they could and to support the effort.
President Frank announced next weeks speaker - Rotary District Governor Lloyd Horadan and closed the meeting with the four way test.
