Annual Rotary Golf Tournament
Date: Tuesday, May 11, 2010
Location: River Golf Club
Meeting Minutes for Monday, April 26, 2010
President Bob opened the meeting and requested a moment of silence in memory of Barbara Botts. How appropriate that Barbara was remembered on a day when the program was focused on Alzheimers Disease since Barbara was a committed advocate of the Cart Fund and all other activities supporting Alzheimers research.

David Hudson led the pledge and invocation and Richard Isdell introduced the guests and visiting Rotarians.

Bill Kemp presented permanent membership badges to Rebekah Henry, Gould Hagler, Scott Smith and Dustin Young following their successful completion of the recent orientation session.

Harold Jones introduced Judge Carl Brown as our newest Paul Harris Fellow. Judge Brown responded with words of appreciation for the ways that Rotary has positively impacted his life and his family.

Thom Tuckey gave the Sunshine Report.

Jeanette Cummings introduced Leslie Anderson as the speaker. Leslie is the President and CEO of the Georgia Chapter of the Alzheimers Association. The Association is organized around 7 regional offices including the Augusta Chapter which is led by Kathy Tuckey, wife of member Thom Tuckey.

Leslie opened her presentation with a video entitled My Name is Lisa. The video was a powerful demonstration of how the disease impacts families and relationships.

Leslie explained that Alzheimers is a progressive brain disease and is the most prevalent type of disease under the umbrella of dementia. The disease is not exclusive to older people but can affect those as young as the 30-50 age group.

In order to improve understanding of the disease, Leslie reviewed eight common myths related to the disease and ten common warning signs. She also reviewed the risk factors including family history, age, the heart-brain connection and head injury history. Factors that may help prevent the disease or slow its progress include simple things like remaining physically, mentally and socially active.

Leslie ended her remarks by providing an overview of the services offered by the association and explained opportunities to support the effort including volunteering, donating and advocating.

Further information is available at www.alz.org/georgia.

The meeting was adjourned following the recital of the Four-Way Test.
