Annual Rotary Golf Tournament
Date: Tuesday, May 11, 2010
Location: River Golf Club |
| Meeting Minutes for Monday, March 29, 2010 |
President Bob opened the meeting and called on David Burton who led the pledge and invocation. Guests and visiting Rotarians were introduced.
President Bob asked the club to express their condolences to Dee Bruker on the passing of his sister in law last week. He also reminded the club that committee assignment sheets were on the tables and asked everyone to complete them and turn them in to Frank Mulherin.
Bob called on Thom Tuckey for the Sunshine Report which was dedicated to golf as Masters Week approaches.
Bob recognized Dr. Michael Ash who presented Dr. Mason Thompson as our newest Paul Harris Fellow.
Phil Wahl introduced our guest speaker, Mr. John Curry, Deputy Garrison Commander at Fort Gordon. Mr. Curry shared with us some of his duties which include supporting the Commander in accomplishing the mission of overall base operations management. He also assists the Commander in developing local partnerships, fostering community relations, and handling personnel and resource management activities. He shared with the group that as the largest employer in the area estimates show Fort Gordon has a $1.8 billion economic impact on the CSRA.
Mr. Curry discussed some of the tasks involved with helping Fort Gordon with its mission of training and deploying soldiers. In addition to maintaining 36,000 acres of training facilities they are looking to partner with SRS to use another 120,000 acres in order to expand their training capabilities. He showed us how technology was being utilized in the Battle Command Lab to train soldiers faster and at a lower cost.
Mr. Curry shared with us a variety of construction projects taking place including a new NSA building, new Law Enforcement Center, upgraded barracks, new residential community initiative, and three child care projects. Fort Gordon operates as a city within a city and shares its resources with the local community in the form of shared utilities, public safety and fire prevention, and schools. In closing, the club was reminded of the many recreational opportunities offered to the community which include golf, bowling, skeet shooting, horseback riding, and their award winning dinner theatre.
President Bob reminded the club there would be no meeting during Masters Week and the meeting was adjourned following the recital of the Four-Way Test. |
