Special Presentation

Lee Smith introduced Jim Langford and Lee Shaw of GA Meth Project. According to Jim, GA is #3 in the US re the severity of Meth addiction and consequent problems. The City of Augusta is among the worst in GA! GA Meth Project is a non-profit organization and called for donations to support their effort and initiatives.

Jim went on to emphasize how many crimes would have a Meth related user. Some of the crimes he listed were, check forgery, copper theft, etc.
Meth is supposed to be 5 times more potent and deadly than crack cocaine in terms of the dopamine impact. One hit could last from 4 to 12 hours.

Addicts could stay awake from 5 to 10 days with the drug and creates a brainless human as it burns-out certain circuits of the brain. The first iteration was used by the Nazis to keep soldiers high and awake and to kill without remorse. 70 to 75% of all foster children in GA come from homes with Meth using parents. The key ingredient in Meth is Sudafed mixed with other substances that break down the Sudafed to bring it to the potency level. It takes about 500 to 600 tablets of Sudafed to produce one hit. It costs $25 to $ 30 to buy the drug for one hit, which produces a 4 to 5 hour high. The recovery is very difficult as they drift back.

They are in the process of launching a series of TV, Radio and print ad campaigns to project strongly the effects of the drug and educate in an attempt to rehabilitate current users and prevent new users.

The marketing campaign is being developed by marketing professionals who Hollywood directors hire to promote their movie campaigns. This initiative started in Montana which used to be #5 in the US and due to the efforts of The Meth Project the State has dropped to #38.

The ads are planned to run during prime time on popular shows, such as MTV, VH1, etc., which teenagers and pre teens watch. All major cable channels such as ESPN will also air these ads.

The radio ads are real kids telling their stories of the impact of their addiction. Ads will run in waves so the impact is not diluted. The target age is 12 to 17, as this is the most vulnerable and addicted group.

The users are about 98% predominantly, so they are currently targeting this group. The Meth Project has raised $4 million in GA, and is hoping to raise $500,000 for its initiative in Augusta. The campaign is intended as a prevention campaign and not a treatment initiative.

The video clips, which will air on TV, showed gruesome and traumatic shots of users and the physical and emotional scars. The radio and print ads are expected to complement the TV segments
