Meeting Minutes for February 1st
President Bob opened the meeting and called on Fred Silva to lead in the pledge and invocation.

Dustin Young introduced the guests.

Bill Kemp was honored for his perfect attendance during the past 40 years.

Mark Maund, as the current chair of United Way, talked about the work day on April 23rd and laid the background for forming an effective team of 8 to 15. He mentioned that there are already four members, Walter Dukes (incoming chair), Jeff Spears (co chair), and Stan Shepherd (the foundation chair), and repeated his call for others to step in.

President Bob talked about a volunteer host family for next school year.

New Rotary member, Scott L Smith was introduced by David Hogg and his father Ed. Scott practices real estate law in Augusta.

Brad Means had some interesting tidbits in his inimitable style.

Lee Smith introduced Linda Herdina, who is the Director of Medical Equipment Transport Services (METS). Linda was the past President of Rotary Club in Savannah.

METS is an international service project, founded in 2004 by our District 6920 Rotarians; Supports METS by providing $15 from each member dues; Overseen by Board of Directors made up of District Rotarian; Staffed by District volunteers.

METS collects surplus medical equipment and supplies them to several underprivileged and needy countries such as Peru, Ghana, Uganda, Chile, Dominican Republic, etc. Romania and Mongolia are in schedule to be shipped to for the first time, after overcoming some logistic issues.

A total of $12 million in supplies and equipment has been provided.

How do donors and recipients find METS? Through the web site: www.rotarymets.org

Recipients are found through community mission teams and Rotary International contacts.

Equipment and supplies are indentified through word of mouth.

What can be shipped is anything needed and medical in nature in 40 foot containers.

Some of the recipients are Romanian Orphans in Need (RON); American Foundation for Children with AIDS

How METS does it? Through sorting facilities at Rotary Clubs such as the ones in St. Simons and Centersville.

Sandersville Technical College arranged for its bus and student volunteers who made 4 trips to Macon and 4 trips back to Savannah. They helped pick up and unload 130 beds from Medical Center of Central Georgia, in Macon.

METS is the bridge between our surplus in the US and the needs of the developing world.

Linda concluded her presentation with a call to spread the word about METS to area healthcare providers and asked for our Rotary Club to become a sorting facility for our area.

She ended with a slide which showed three Starbucks coffee, which is what it costs, i.e.$15 per member, to make it possible to provide the worlds needy places with much needed medical supplies and equipment. She suggested that this could be increased to $20, to increase the provision to impact more countries.

President Bob adjourned the meeting with the 4-way Test as usual.
