| Meeting Minutes for January 25th |
President Bob opened the meeting and called on Butch Whiddon to introduce guests and visiting Rotarians.
Trent Butler provided a humorous Sunshine Report on the Super Bowl. He noted that 6% of employees call in sick on the Monday after the big game. The 1st Super Bowl ticket cost $6 and this year the least expensive ticket is $1,779 and most expensive is $4,001. There is no recession at the Super Bowl.
Pam Lightsey gave a report of upcoming events for the District and also for Augusta South Rotary Club.
Jeff Futrelle provided a biography of John Croyle, the keynote speaker for our First Annual Rotary Founders Dinner. John is the founder of the Big Oak Ranch in Gadsden, Alabama. The Dinner will be March 11, 2010 and the location is the Augusta Marriott Hotel. Make plans to attend.
Richard Rogers introduced our guest speaker, Strom Thurmond, Jr.
Mr. Thurmond is the son of the late Senator Strom Thurmond. Strom, Jr. is the Solicitor with the Second Judicial Circuit serving Aiken, Bamberg and Barnwell counties. He commented on his work with the Augusta Judicial Circuit and how S.C. gets more news from Augusta and about Augusta than he receives about news events in S.C.
Strom, Jr. loves his job and feels he has a direct impact on the communities in the Second Judicial Circuit as well as Augusta, Richmond County, and noted that his case backlog is shrinking.
His office has removed the Roll Call and has began a new Appearance Program that seems be working well. The jail population has been reduced as a result of working closely with law enforcement in both states.
Thurmond noted budget cuts have been required and some of the programs previously administered by his office have been cut. He noted the correlation between the economy and crime and that 75% of crime is related to substance abuse of some sort.
A short question and answered session followed his comments.
President Bob adjourned the meeting following recital of the Four-Way Test.
