NEW SYMPHONY CONDUCTOR INTRODUCED TO AUGUSTA ROTARY
Augusta Rotary member and performer Paul Dainer introduced speaker Shizuo Kuwahara, know as "Z," the enthusiastic and animated new conductor of our symphony in Augusta. "Z", following Harry Jacobs and Donald Portnoy as the third Augusta symphony conductor, explained some of the thoughts about and visions for the symphony.
"Z" has rebranded the organization from The Augusta Symphony (TAS) to avoid confusion with other locations, such as The Atlanta Symphony(TAS). The new name will be Symphony Orchestra Augusta (SOA). He has also auditioned all prospective performers of the symphony and is very excitied about the amazing musical talent and opportunities Augusta has to offer. "Z" thinks Augusta has the potential to be a national or world class name with challenging performances if we in Augusta believe in, promote, and attend performances by different groups of Symphony Orchestra Augusta.
He also believes in bringing excitement and vibrancy to the this podium. A performance should have some part that brings "goose bumps" to the listener. Music could increasingly enrich the city and "touch every street corner." "Z" wants to bring musical performances closer to the audience. He is in the process of creating arrangements of some of the classics for small ensembles and introducing these as well as intriguing musical puzzles arranged by Bach and other masters into Augusta schools.
When asked about performance venues, he mentioned that The Miller Theater has many attributes to make it attractive for performances of Symphony Orchestra Augusta. It is being assessed by various expert consultants to determine any need for change in acoustics, lighting, and seating. He thinks that the way that area of downtown Augusta is developing might make The Miller an excellent choice for symphony performances.
The meeting was ajourned following the recital of the Four-Way Test. |
