Guest Speaker/Program

President Bill introduced our guest speaker, Carla Hamann, MPA from the Sexual Assault Response Center. She shared a history of the organization with the Club. It started as a grassroots effort in 1975 and was operated under the United Way of the CSRA. After the program grew traction, it transitioned to become a program of University Hospital in 1985. It operated as a component of University Hospital until last summer when it became a separate stand-alone organization. The application for nonprofit status was submitted in August 2023, and approval was received in February 2024. The organization is primarily funded by grant funds and conducts many programs around sexual assault support and awareness. The programs include:

  • 24-hour crisis hotline
  • Advocacy and crisis intervention
  • Counseling services
  • Education and prevention
  • Community outreach and awareness

The organization and its staff are a part of the Augusta and Columbia County Sexual Assault Response Team (SART). It is currently working to increase the availability of Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners (SANE) in our community through training and certification programs. Although the organization’s location is undisclosed, it has a brick-and-mortar office with multiple exam rooms. It collaborates closely with the local hospitals to respond to sexual assault incidents when they occur. She shared recent efforts around fundraising for the organization to support its programs and services beyond what the current grant funds support. Two successful fundraising initiatives were recently conducted through the Augusta Greenjackets and Broad Street Tattoo Studio. She invited the club members to consider making a gift to the organization so that it can expand its programs and services within our community.

President Bill led us in reciting the four-way test and then adjourned the meeting.
