Guest Speaker/Program

Dat Hoang introduced our guest speaker, Past Club President, Jennifer Pennington, Executive Director of VIA Cognitive Health

Jennifer joined the Judson C Hickey Center for Alzheimer Care in 2016.  The center has been part of the community for 40 years and recently rebranded as VIA Cognitive Health.  The rebrand is part of their expansion into a new facility on Washington Road.

The new center provides much needed space for their programming and allows them to serve more patients than they could accommodate in their original facility.  It is estimated that over 10,000 people in the CSRA have dementia and over 6 million are affected across the country.

Jennifer explained that dementia is an umbrella term that covers many different types of cognitive issues, with Alzheimer’s accounting for 60-80% of cases.

Increased funding and research have led to a new diagnosis called Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI).  The recognition of MCI will lead to an increased need for services and the center is preparing for that growth.  Jennifer shared with us the layout of the facility and how the center provides for patients with a variety of cognitive issues needing various levels of care.

The center hosts a Brain Health Luncheon the 3rd Thursday of each month.  Anyone interested in participating or learning more can reach out to Jennifer or contact the center.

President Bill led us in reciting the four-way test and then adjourned the meeting.
