Tim Owings introduced our guest speaker, Bill Curry, NFL Football player and 3-time champion (including Super Bowls I and V), Coach (Georgia Tech, University of Alabama, and first coach at Georgia State University), Leader (President of the NFL Players Association, COO for the National Consortium for Academics & Sports), Analyst (for ESPN), Author (“One More July – A Football Dialogue” with George Plimpton, “Ten Men You Meet in the Huddle”), Husband, Father, and Grandfather (Married to Carolyn 50+ years, 2 children, 7 grandchildren), Man (“…a mentor, advisor, father-figure, role model, philanthropist, and…a person who improves and enriches the lives of everyone he touches.”)  Coach Curry gave an inspirational presentation about his career experiences including heart-warming stories of wanting to pitch for the NY Yankees, but being told by his first football coach that he “had to play Center”,  being brought down to a reality by a grandchild who told him “your breath is terrible”, to a fellow African American player who taught him about friendship and leadership across racial barriers, finally to his vision of collegiate athletics where a coach can “help young athletes to recognize and realize their potential”.

Following the presentation, President Jennifer led us in reciting the four way test and then adjourned the meeting.

Our next meeting will be on November 28 with speaker Dr. Sam Khleif with the MCG/Augusta University Cancer Center.  He will give and update on the Moonshot program.
