Meeting Minutes
President Jennifer Pennington opened the meeting and called on George Hall who led the pledge and invocation. Margaret Woodard introduced the guests and visiting Rotarians. Thanks to last week’s Club Cart Challenger we raised $307.53. This week’s Inside Challenger is Susan Jernigan and Outside Challenger is Howard Johnson on Jimmy Dyess Parkway. Brad Means gave the Sunshine Report. Jeff Simless announced the results of the Football Follies.
Announcements
President Jennifer reminded the club about the upcoming book drive.
President Jennifer Pennington called on Fran Forehand to introduce Paul Bowers of Georgia Power.
Paul Bowers, the president and CEO of Georgia Power addressed the club. First, he discussed the new logo of Georgia Power and its meaning. It builds on the iconic red triangle and adds light blue, light green and dark blue to convey the addition of gas (through the purchase of AGL Resources) as well as the growth and innovation in the building the future of energy. He mentioned trends in customer habits that has resulted in billing offices closing — over half pay by mail or electronically now. He pointed two the addition of the new towers at Plant Vogtle and important of nuclear energy due to its cost effectiveness. He also mentioned that some alternative energy sources such as solar or wind were in theory good ideas, they were not reliable 24/7. Paul discussed the rise of the “smart grid” which could pinpoint an outage to the degree of being house specific. In closing he discussed concerns regarding cyber security and mentioned that they receive over two million pings a day on their server. However, this is a team in place to monitor such attempts.
No meeting next week due to Columbus Day. Next meeting will be October 17, 2016.
The meeting was adjourned following the recital of the Four-Way Test.
