Meeting Minutes

President Scott Williams rang the bell and called the meeting to order. George Hall led us in the pledge and invocation. Jeff Simless updated us on the Football Follies. Melvin LaPan was the winner for week 10. Frank Mulherin is in the lead YTD. Brad Means gave the Sunshine Report. Last week we raised $335.58 for the Cart Fund. Last week our inside challenger was Sheri Osburn and our outside challenger was ADP.  This week our inside challenger is Laverne Gaskins and our outside challenger is Mack Lander, LLC. Susan Everitt introduced our guests and visiting Rotarians.

President Scott Williams introduced our GRSP Student William Baerenholdt. William will be going to his first UGA football game this upcoming weekend.

De Pierce gave an announcement concerning the Annual Fundraiser and the Horizon Foundation. There will be a press conference next week, unsure of the date at this time. There will also be a golf tournament, The Dr. Mac Bowman Horizon Foundation, on November 18th @ West Lake Country Club.

Paul Danier introduced our guest speaker Dr. Jorge Cortes.

Dr. Jorge Cortes is the Director of the Georgia Cancer Center. He started in this position as of September 1, 2019. He spent his previous 27 years at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center. While at MD Anderson he had many important roles in the Department of Leukemia and Cancer Medicine. He moved to Augusta with his wife and two children. He stated there was two main reasons he decided to come to Augusta. Those being, the support from the institution and the great connection to the community.

The Georgia Cancer Center had over 63,000 patient visits in the 2018 fiscal year. They have also experienced a 34.9% patient growth rate over the past 5 years. Their recent expansion of 78,000 sqft will help accommodate at least 12 new cancer researchers. Clinical Care, Clinical Research, Basic Science, and Community Engagement are the four areas of focus and excellence of the Georgia Cancer Center and Dr. Jorge Cortes.

Georgia Cancer Center Mission- “To reduce the burden of cancer in the State of Georgia and across the globe through superior care, innovation and education at the forefront of all endeavors.”

Dr. Jorge Cortes listed some key points on how they plan on building the future of the Georgia Caner Center.

  • Artificial intelligence and machine learning
  • Early detection
  • Develop and attract experts
  • Enhance clinical trial portfolio
  • Strategic emphasis in areas of need

Following the program President Scott Williams led the club in the four-way test and adjourned the meeting.
