Program:

President Scott called on John Sebby to introduce our guest speaker, Major Douglas McClure, Area Commander and Senior Kroc Officer for the Salvation Army of Augusta.

Major McClure has been in Augusta for only a month but is quickly getting to know his way around.  For the last 17 years, he has served the Salvation Army in various assignments around the state of Georgia.  Augusta is the largest assignment outside of Atlanta.

The Salvation Army has two primary facilities in the area, the eight-year-old Kroc Center and the forty plus year old Center of Hope on Greene Street, along with several stores around town.  One of the priorities for Major McClure is renovating or securing a new location for the Center of Hope, which has outgrown its capacity to serve the community.  Currently, funding is not available to either relocate or renovate.

Major McClure also mentioned several programs that most of the community is not aware of including their work with veterans to help them find work and connect to other available resources, their drug/alcohol rehab program for men that helps them find a job and ultimately reconnect to their families, the child care program on Wednesday nights, and Golden Agers program on Monday mornings.

In closing, Major McClure stressed the need for the Salvation Army and the community to work together to better serve the citizens.  No one organization can do it all and they want to find ways to collaborate with others groups and individuals who are committed to serving others.

Following his remarks, President Scott led us in reciting the four-way test and then adjourned the meeting.
