June 10, 2019
President Leland Malchow rang the bell and called the meeting to order. Rick Lowe gave the pledge and invocation. President Leland welcomed two special visiting Rotarians. Daps is the President Elect of his club in Ghana and he is visiting his very first club in the US. Leland and Daps exchanged club flags. Also, Past District Governor, Audley Knight, from Montego Bay, Jamaica joined us today. Thanks to our inside challenger, Sonny Tucker and the outside challenger, Matt Guzman, Audi Sales Manager, the club raised $189.79 for CART at our last meeting. This week the inside challenger is Stacy Tallent and our outside challenger is Health Center Credit Union. Richard Rogers gave the Sunshine Report.
- President Leland reported that we are joining with the Augusta West Rotary Club and collaborating with MAP International to bring medicine to St. Vincent’s Clinic. Anyone interested in participating this Thursday should contact Leland.
- Our next meeting on June 17 will be the year-end review and distribution of the Paul Harris Fellow and other club awards. Please make every effort to attend.
- The June 24 meeting will include the Passing of the Gavel ceremony. Please join us as we thank all prior club Presidents and welcome our new officers for the 2019-2020 Rotary year.
President Leland called on Erick Montgomery to introduce our guest speaker, Special Agent Steve Foster with the Georgia Bureau of Investigation. SA Foster has been with the GBI for over 30 years and has been assigned to Augusta since 1995. In 2018, he was appointed Special Agent In Charge of the Cyber Crime Center.
He explained the growing need for cyber security and the ever-increasing crimes related to computers, phones, emails, faxes and any device that is tied to a computer. SA Foster shared that over 92% of cyber crimes start with emails. Phishing (targeting) and Spoofing (account takeover) are both on the rise and it will take a full-scale effort to fight against these attacks.
Businesses must train their employees frequently on the latest cyber crime techniques and teach them to how to spot phishing emails looking for account information or access. They must also scrutinize all emails to make sure they are coming from the true owner of the email. This is especially true when using an email as authorization to process a transaction or payment.
Ransomware events appear to be declining with only about 100 per year, however, the invention of cryptocurrency has led to higher per incident losses. SA Foster engaged the club in a robust question and answer session following his presentation.
Following the presentation, President Leland led us in reciting the four-way test and then adjourned the meeting.
Our next meeting will be June 17 and President Leland will present his year-end review.
