Meeting Minutes
President Leland Malchow rang the bell and called the meeting to order. He asked that the Club take a moment of silence to remember and honor the life of long time member Carolyn Maund who passed away last week. Erik Montgomery gave the pledge and invocation. Daniel Rhodes welcomed our guests and visiting Rotarians. Thanks to our inside challenger, Charles Stewart, and the outside challenger, Jimmy Richards of the Pollock Company, the club raised $317.21 for CART at our last meeting. This week the inside challenger is TR Reddy and our outside challenger is Robert Osborne with South State Bank. Faye Hargrove gave our Sunshine Report and challenged each of us to answer the question, “What do I stand for?”
Announcements:
- Rotary Golf Tournament will be held Tuesday May 7, 2019 at the River Club in North Augusta. Sign-up sheets are on the table.
- This Saturday at 9:00 the Club will be helping the American Red Cross install new smoke alarms. Flyers for the event are on the table and anyone wishing to participate can call the Red Cross at 706-724-8481 or check online at www.redcross.org/augusta.

Program:
Sue Parr introduced our guest speaker, Mr. Jim Davis, President and CEO of University Hospital. Mr. Davis has been at UH since 2009 and became President in 2010. He has enjoyed a much longer tenure in this role than most in the industry where the length of service is around four years.
Mr. Davis has a mechanical engineering background, coupled with a Masters in Business Administration, which gives him a little different perspective than most hospital administrators. He shared a couple of slides from a presentation he gave our club in 2015 and admitted the same challenges then are just as relevant today.
All hospitals are struggling with decreasing reimbursements, patient access, cost of poor quality, cost challenges, and population health management. Mr. Davis lamented on the ever-shifting healthcare economics, which is taking money from hospitals and providers and funding insurance and pharmaceutical companies.
Even with all of these challenges, UH is doing surprisingly well. In the last six years, they have increased beds from 581-837, they have provided nearly $50 million in charity/indigent care, and prompt care visits have expanded from 18,500 to 66,500. During this same period, they have acquired McDuffie County Hospital and Trinity Hospital, as well as, Kentwood, Westwood, and Amara nursing homes. There has also been a shift in the number of employed physicians, which increased, from 16 to 130.
Mr. Davis spoke very positively about the relationship with AU Medical Center and various partnerships they are working on together including the surgery center in Evans and one with AU’s Cancer Center.
He concluded his presentation by taking questions from the audience.
Following the presentation, President Leland led us in reciting the four-way test and then adjourned the meeting.
