Last week we raised $375 for the Cart Fund thanks to our inside challenger Chris McKinney and outside challenger Rick Franza.  This week the inside challenger is Brenda Durant and the outside challenger is Shanda Vaughn.

SMASH ALZHEIMERS

John Whitwell reported that he just returned from Perry, Georgia where he spoke to the local Rotary Club asking for support of the Smash Alzheimers effort.  He reminded our club that he is asking for help to spread the word about the campaign by making videos to post on social media.  The project is intended to raise awareness and financial support outside of our club, which is already doing so much to help.

SIGNATURE FUNDRAISING RAFFLE

President Leland congratulated the club on the outstanding effort in support of the Horizon Foundation raffle, which benefited Child Enrichment.  He recognized the top 10 ticket sellers highlighted by Patrick Cullinan who sold 50 tickets.  Later this year, the top 10 will be recognized with Paul Harris points.  Also, the Board has agreed to participate again next year.

President Leland recognized our special guests, Dr. Mac Bowman and Dee Pierce with the Horizon Foundation, Nate Cartwright with Mercedes, and Carie Viola Brooks CEO of Child Enrichment.  Dr. Bowman thanked the club and gave an inspirational message on using God’s gifts to help others.  Leland then presented Ms. Brooks with a check for $25,000. Ms. Brooks thanked the club and reminded us all of why services provided by her organization are so vital to our community.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

  • President Leland announced that on Monday, March 18, we will not have a regular lunch meeting, but will instead celebrate St. Patrick’s Day with a social from 5:00-7:00 p.m.  Everyone and a guest are invited and all members are encouraged to bring potential membership prospects.  We will enjoy Irish music, food, and beverages.
  • Mr. Bill Kemp will have a Rotary Information Committee meeting later this afternoon at 4:30 at the Intellisystems office downtown.
  • Ms. Kelly Knitter, guest from Augusta South Rotary Club, invited everyone to attend their annual event, A Taste of Something Wild coming up on Saturday March 9 at 5:00 p.m.  Flyers are on the tables with more information.

PROGRAM

Rotarian Sue Parr introduced our speaker Ms. Teresa Cobb with Georgia Power who talked to us about a partnership between the Augusta Metro Chamber of Commerce and the Richmond County Board of Education called Students2Work.

Ms. Cobb began with a short video testimonial describing the benefits of the program from both the student and the employer perspective.  By collaborating with the program, businesses have an opportunity to give back to the community by hiring one or more summer interns for an eight-week program.  Students, in addition to being paid, learn valuable life skills that translate into any work environment such as how to dress for work, phone skills, and organizational skills.  This program better prepares them both for higher education and for future employment opportunities.

The program is in its second year and off to a great start.  A student application process is currently underway with over 184 applications received so far.  If selected, students will participate in a weeklong orientation followed by seven weeks of fieldwork at their assigned business.  While onsite, they will work a minimum of 32 hours and earn a minimum of $8 per hour.

The program is looking to fill 250 student slots and is always looking for area businesses to sponsor the program, mentor students, and host student workers.  Anyone interested in learning more should visit www.student2work.org.

REMINDERS

Our next meeting will be March 11, 2019 and our speaker will be Janice Jackson, club member and Augusta’s City Administrator.

President Leland led the club in the 4-way test and the meeting was adjourned at 1:15 PM.
