CART: At our last meeting, we raised $108.33 for CART. We will continue raising money and awareness for Alzheimer’s through contributions to the blue buckets, however, we are going to suspend the Inside and Outside challenges for November, December, and January while we focus on the Smash Alzheimer’s Campaign and the upcoming Signature Fundraising Raffle.
COLLEGE PICK ‘EM
Report given by John Simless, announced the following weekly winners:
- Week 11 – Paul Wade
- Week 12 – Steve Farmer
- Week 13 – Max Stachura
Current standings were available at the sign-in table. Chris Melcher is the year to date leader followed by Jeff Simless and John Whitwell.
SIGNATURE FUNDRAISING RAFFLE
President Leland announced that we have partnered with Mercedes Benz of Augusta and the Dr. Mac Bowman Foundation to raffle off a brand new Mercedes Benz. Details include the following:
- The Raffle will be held in early February.
- The Signature Fundraising Committee, Board of Directors, and I are asking each Club member to buy or sell at least three tickets.
- Those who cannot buy tickets will be asked to work at some of the raffle ticket-selling functions.
- The top 5 ticket purchasers and sellers will be awarded a thousand Paul Harris Points.
- The second top 5 ticket purchasers or sellers will be awarded 500 Paul Harris Points each.
- Each member who buys or sells 3 tickets will receive a Rotary Club of Augusta, Service Above Self lapel pin.
- All members participating will receive acknowledgment in a fundraising report to the Club.
- Our Club's goal is to sell 500 tickets or more.
- The proceeds should net approximately $25,000 for Child Enrichment.
- Tickets are $100 and only a thousand tickets will be sold.
- The Signature Fundraising Committee looked at many fundraising opportunities and they believe this raffle is the best way for our Club to assist Child Enrichment in the vital work that it performs in our community.
- Thank you for your help in making this a successful fundraising campaign.
President Leland showed a brief promotional video for the raffle featuring our very own Richard Rogers. He then asked Willie Williams to come forward and help present Rotary pins to over 20 club members who had already sold or committed to selling at least three tickets. So far, the club has sold 165 tickets with a goal to sell 500. Tickets will be available for pick up at the table on your way out.
President Leland reported on behalf of Lowell Greenbaum that advanced voting for the Secretary of State is underway. Please vote!!
Scott Sidle reported that tomorrow is “Giving Tuesday” which is a way for people to donate to their favorite non-profit following their shopping sprees on Black Friday and Cyber Monday.
PROGRAM
Rotarian Billy Frankie introduced our guest speaker, Dr. Jim Hull, Chair of the Georgia Board of Regents. Regent Hull is a very special guest not only because of his service to the community and the state but also because his grandfather was one of the original founders of our club over 100 years ago. He is a Paul Harris Fellow, a great businessman and very generous philanthropist.
Regent Hull provided us with an update on the University System of Georgia (USG), which is comprised of 26 teaching institutions serving 328,000 students and the administrative office. USG is responsible for generating a $16.8 billion net economic impact and employees 163,000.
USG’s goals are to graduate more students, make higher education more affordable, and become more efficient in their operations. Regent Hull shared that during the last seven years the system has combined schools and reduced their numbers from 35 to 26 saving nearly $31 million for the state. He reported that the USG is committed to helping Georgia build an educated workforce, which is the number one driver for attracting new businesses to our state.
In closing, he fielded questions from the floor during which he reminded the club that Augusta University has launched an engineering program in computer science.
ANNOUNCEMENTS
- Our next meeting on December 3rd and will feature Lauren Dallas, Executive Director of Turn Back the Block. The Augusta Players will also present a couple of scenes from their play, “A Christmas Story, a Musical”.
- General Perry Smith will speak on December 10th and December 17th will be our traditional Christmas Party with children running the meeting. The Salvation Army will be onsite ringing the bell for their Kettle Drive on the 10th and 17th.
- There will be no meetings on 24th or the 31st because of the holidays and then our first meeting in January will be the CSRA Economic Forecast Luncheon at the Marriott.
WRAP-UP
President Leland led the club in the 4-way test and the meeting was adjourned at 1:15 PM.
