President Leland Malchow rang the bell to call the meeting to order. Erick Montgomery gave the Pledge and Invocation. President Leland introduced the guests and visiting Rotarians. At our last meeting we raised $309.39. The inside challenger was Susan Jernigan and her new company, Jernigan Group South and the outside challenger was Claffey Printing Company. This week the inside challenger is club member Havird Usry and the outside challenger is The Southern Salad.
- President Leland reminded the club that John Whitwell is heading up the Smash Alzheimer’s event to raise money. More details will be coming soon.
- President Leland, reminded everyone about the upcoming Family of Rotary night will be at the Greenjackets stadium on August 23rd. The game will include a fireworks show. Tickets are $25 each and include a full dinner buffet. Anyone interested in participating should reach out to Leigh Porterfield for more details.
- He also congratulated Erin Armstrong on the birth of her daughter, Emily.
- On August 27th, the club will meet at the Bell Auditorium to help the United Way kick off their annual campaign.
President Leland called on Commissioner Jeff Simless to explain the format and the rules of our upcoming football pick-em that will start in about a week. Following his report, the Commissioner kicked off our First Annual Rotary Tailgate by introducing our Head Referee Gene McManus and giving us the ground rules for the tailgate.
The crowd was entertained, and in some cases, educated about the history and rivalry of the various teams represented. There was also a little trash talking between some of the more highly anticipated gridiron contests.
The room was very festive with football decorations throughout thanks to the Family of Rotary Committee. Club members also took the opportunity to show their support for their favorite team by dressing in shirts, hats, pants, and jerseys. Overall, a good time was had by all. At the end of the tailgate, Brad “Role Tide” Means bested Leland “How Bout them Dawgs” Malchow and earned the award for most school spirit.
There will not be a meeting on September 3 because of the Labor Day holiday. Our next meeting will be September 10.
The meeting was adjourned with the Four Way Test.
