PROGRAM

President Ed called on Janice Jackson to introduce our guest speaker, Mr. Hawthorne Welcher Jr., with the City of Augusta Housing and Community Development (AHCD).  Mr. Welcher is a native Augustan with twenty years of experience in community development.

Mr. Welcher cleared up any confusion between his agency and the Augusta Housing Authority (AHA), which primarily deals with public housing and Section 8 housing. The AHCD oversees federal funds received by the city and reviews applications before awarding those funds to various housing projects. The AHCD operates in four key areas; housing, support services, finance, and redevelopment. Mr. Welcher presented slides of various housing projects that included transforming existing neighborhoods, as well as, developing new residential, commercial, and retail projects from the ground up.

He remained after the meeting to answer questions and discuss any of these projects in more detail.

REMINDER

Our next meeting will be March 12th and the speaker will be Glenn Parker, Director of the City of Augusta Recreation and Parks.

The meeting was adjourned with the Four Way Test.
